FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WE DON’T REPLACE THE JAIL’S PHONE SYSTEM, BUT, WE GUARANTEE TO SAVE YOU MONEY
MY INMATE CANNOT CALL ME!! – HOW CAN I SPEAK TO MY INMATE ASAP? HOW DOES INMATE CALLING WORK?
TO SPEAK TO YOUR INMATE ASAP DO THIS:
CALL THE JAIL - ask for the name and phone number of the Jail’s PHONE CARRIER that manages Inmate Calls. Inmate families must have a prepaid account with the Jail’s phone carrier. INMATES MUST MAKE ALL CALLS USING THE JAIL’S PHONE CARRIER SO THAT THE CALLS CAN BE RECORDED.
THESE ARE SOME OF THE TELEPHONE COMPANIES THAT INSTALL AND MANAGE JAIL PHONE SYSTEMS:
- Inmate Magazine Service partner GLOBALTEL LINK (GTL) – The largest company
- SECURUSTECH - one of the largest
- There are only about four other phone carriers in the Inmate calling business. The two above manage 80% of all jails in the country.
CALL THE JAIL’S PHONE COMPANY - to open an account, pay them and REGISTER your phone own home or mobile number for your inmate to call. You usually must pay at least $25 with a credit or debit card. YOUR INMATE CANNOT CALL ANY NUMBER THAT IS NOT REGISTERED AT THE JAIL. THE NUMBER MUST BE REGISTERED SO THAT ALL CALLS CAN BE RECORDED. You will be charged by the minute and/or will pay a CONNECTION FEE and/or an INITIAL MINUTE RATE. These calls can be very expensive and you will want to find a cheaper way to talk to your Inmate. That is what we do – reduce the costs charged by the Jail’s phone companies.
WHY CAN’T GLOBALTEL HELP ME SPEAK TO MY INMATE IMMEDIATELY? Only the Jail’s Phone company can authorize your Inmate to call you; we are not the Jail’s phone company. We specialize in saving Inmate Families money on the phone calls from their Inmates. We do not install and manage the phone systems in the jails and prisons in the United States. We do not sign contracts with any jail or prison and we do not record your Inmate’s phone calls; the Jail’s phone company does that. We save money for Inmate families nationwide and can serve Inmates in any local, state or federal prison. But, you must have an account with the Jail’s phone system provider before you can use our service.
HOW DO WE SAVE YOU MONEY ON CALLS FROM YOUR INMATE?
WE GUARANTEE TO SAVE YOU MONEY OR YOUR MONEY BACK! Inmate Magazine Service saves you money by giving you a local or a long distance phone FORWARDING NUMBER for your Inmate to call. The FORWARDING NUMBER must be registered with the jail’s inmate calling phone carrier. When your Inmate calls the FORWARDING NUMBER it will ring to your phone.
Our charge for that service is $45.99 for 90 days, never more, never less (except for Federal Prisons - $9.99 per month). We do not charge by the minute; the $45.99 is for a FORWARDING NUMBER. It will probably be an out-of-state phone number. Why? Because local and in-state calls from jails are usually very expensive – States and counties charge whatever they want to for Local and Intrastate calls. The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) sets rates for inmate calls to other states (Inter-state calls) at $0.21 per minute ($3.15 for 15 minutes) and CONNECTION FEES and INITIAL MINUTE RATE charges are not allowed. Our FORWARDING NUMBER AVOIDS THE EXPENSIVE LOCAL AND INTRASTATE CALLS.
YOU MUST ALWAYS PAY THE JAIL’S PHONE CARRIER FOR ROUTING THE CALL, YOU PAY US, ONLY FOR THE FORWARDING NUMBER. OUR FORWARDING NUMBER REDUCES THE COST OF THE CALLS.
DO YOU HAVE TO HAVE AN ACCOUNT WITH GlobalTel AND ALSO WITH THE JAIL’S PHONE PROVIDER? Yes. You need a phone account with us and with the Jail’s phone provider. Why? Because the Jail’s phone provider must record your Inmate’s calls; so the money-saving phone number we give you must be registered with the Jail before it will work when your Inmate calls you.
HOW DOES HAVING TWO PHONE ACCOUNTS SAVE YOU MONEY? Because the Jail’s phone service is very expensive. Inmate calling is a multi-billion dollar industry; some families can only afford one phone call per month. When an Inmate needs to speak to his family or business associates each day, the jail phone bill can be several hundred dollars per month. The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) has ordered a sharp reduction in Inmate Calling rates, fees and ancillary charges, but, those new rates are not in effect yet; the FCC’s order is being litigated by the multi-billion dollar companies that install and manage the phone systems in the thousands of jails in America.
OTHER QUESTIONS AND GENERAL INFORMATION
HOW INMATE CALLING WORKS AND HOW WE SAVE YOU MONEY
Q: HOW MUCH MONEY WILL YOU SAVE? GLOBALTEL assigns its special number for your Inmate to call based on the factor listed below. We guarantee to save you money and will work with you to make sure you get the maximum savings.
Savings vary from city to city, county to county, state to state, facility to facility. It also depends on where you live; rates are different if for families living near the jail, in the same state as the jail, or in another state or country. Also, there are maximum and minimum security prisons, and jails all have different connection fees, deposit fees, commissions and other charges that have nothing to do with the cost of making a phone call. And, some Inmates call several times a day, others call several times a month.
The amount you save depends on these factors:
THE JAIL – city, county, state and federal jails, prisons, detention centers, work facilities, etc.
THE STATE – Each state sets the rates for the local and in-state calls in the State prisons.
THE COUNTY – Each county in the United States sets the rates for the local and in-state calls in the county jails
THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION – sets rates for Interstate (out-of-state) calls.
CONNECTION FEES – are charged by cities, counties and states – these can be as high as $7.95 per call
DEPOSIT FEES – ($5.00 is typical) charged just to deposit money in your Jail call account with the Jail’s phone company
WHERE YOU LIVE – local to the Jail, in the same state, or in another state?
TALK TIME and the NUMBER OF CALLS PER DAY that you receive from your Inmate. If your Inmate calls several times a day, a CONNECTION fee of $2.00 to $7.95 for each call can get very expensive.
GLOBALTEL assigns its special number for your Inmate to call based on the factors listed above. We guarantee to save you money and will work with you to make sure you get the maxim savings possible.
Q: CAN YOU SAVE MY INMATE MONEY IF THEY ARE IN A COUNTY OR LOCAL JAIL?
Yes, if you live near the jail (in the local calling area) we may save you money by giving you a long distance number. We would do that if the local jail charges a high connection fee. For example, if the connection fee is $3.50 each time your Inmate calls we may give you an out-of-State number. The FCC prohibits connection fees on Interstate calls and long distance rates are never more than $0.21 per minute for all states.
Q: IF YOU ARE IN THE SAME AREA CODE AS THE JAIL IS IT A LOCAL CALL? Not always. If your area provides measured service local calling, the cost of calls may vary based on the distance from your home. You may have “local exchange service” (a local call that you do not have to pay for); “local toll service” (a local call that you must pay a “toll” for such as 25 cents, or, per minute; and “expanded local exchange service”(a large area designated as a local call that you do not have to pay for). Because these “local call areas” usually involve calls within a state, they are usually regulated by your state public service commission. http://transition.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/local_long.pdf
Q: Can you save money if my Inmate is in a federal prison? Yes, we will give you a local phone number. You probably do not live near a Federal Prison, so it is probably a long distance call. If it is, we will give you a phone number that is local to the prison and you will pay us $9.99 per month. You will also pay$0.06 (six cents) per minute to the BOP (Federal Bureau of Prisons). Your savings will be substantial because the Federal long distance rates are very high. The inmates are allowed 300 minutes per month
See: https://www.bop.gov/inmates/communications.jsp for details and information about communicating with Federal Inmates.
NOTE: Your Federal Inmate may have a trust fund at the prison which will pay for his phone calls.
Q: Why do the services like Global Tel Link or Securus tell us your service is a scam? Because we compete with them. No business likes a competitor.
They have tried to block our services but the FCC denied them and has issued many rulings encouraging competition. The Public policy on Inmate calling is this: “Studies show that when inmates maintain relationships with friends and family, it greatly reduces the risk they will recidivate”.
Q: What if my inmate gets moved, do I have to sign up and pay again? NO. We will give you a new phone number for your Inmate to call. There is no cost.
Q: If my Inmate is released are there any refunds for the unused minutes? No. We charge $29.99 per month; for unlimited minutes; we do not charge per minute.
Q: Why do the Jail’s phone companies often charge more for local calls than for long distance calls? There are several reasons; local and state jails have the option to charge CONNECTION fees. For example, anywhere from $.50 to $7.95 per local call. The money raised from these fees is used to maintain the jail, or for the city or county. They are not allowed by the FCC to charge CONNECTION FEES to Interstate long distance calls.
In the case of SECURUSTECH, you can view their RATE CALCULATOR: https://securustech.net/call-rate-calculator . You can see the CONNECTION fee and the rate per minute. None of the other companies that manage jail calls have rate files that you can view online.
